Did you know that you should be cleaning your make up brushes regularly? Although it feels like one of life’s most boring tasks, washing your make up brushes should be an essential part of your beauty routine.

When you use your brushes daily, make up, oil, dirt and even bacteria get caught in the bristles. Therefore, not washing your make up brushes can expose us to harmful toxins and cause serious problems for your skin (and even health), which means washing them regularly is necessary to avoid irritation, breakouts and infections. Not to mention the fact that quality brushes can be quite expensive! Learning how to properly clean them is one of the best ways to protect your investment.

Luckily, cleaning your make up brushes can be quick and easy. First, for daily brush cleaning I would spritz some cleaner on to your brushes after each use and gently wipe them on a cloth or tissue. This will keep them bacteria free. Then, once a week, it’s time for a deep clean! For this, I’d recommend washing them after you’ve applied your makeup and leaving them to dry for the rest of the day and over-night.

Here’s the right way to clean your makeup brushes…

STEP 1: Begin by running your brushes under lukewarm water. Try to focus on the actual bristles while avoiding the part of the brush where handle meets the head, as this can loosen the glue over time and ruin your brushes.

STEP 2: Fill a bowl with the water and a small amount of shampoo. Gently swirl your brush tip in the water. I would also recommend swirling the brush in the palm of your hand to work up a lather

STEP 3: Rinse the bristles under running water once again. Repeat steps two and three until the water runs clear.

STEP 4: Squeeze out any excess water and reshape the bristles.

STEP 5: Lay your brushes on a flat surface, with the bristles slightly over the edge to dry.

Following these steps will keep your brushes clean, hygienic and your make-up will go so much better!
